My mom bought a mower 4 or 5 years. It is stored in our heated garage every winter one (Minnesota winter to -30 degrees) machine is incredible! You do not need any real maintenance than gas mowers. TO: There is no need to change the oil, motor oil for the winter, fill it with gas, waste oil disposal problems. Do not smell gas No pollution / emissions Pig just lawnmower AGAINST: Do not have an engine Tim Taylor POWER You are connected to cable, Abstract: It is a silent (er) is not silent, of course, but it Woosh over a loud mower gas. Inhibition of using 100% reliable, you do not shoot back and started to pull a strain trying to run it as a gas mower. As I said at the end of 4 or 5 winter works so well, that day we had. Although he did not get all the blade, which will be fascinating to see if I can get a knife. I saw that someone posted a figure, when the blade does not fall down or something. But the blade does not hurt very much. We have pine trees in our yard and hit a lot of cones originates on the slide with pieces of foam mat spots in some places. I cut lawns for money, since I was 14 years ancient, so I have 12 years experience with lawn mowers. This is the best mower I have never heard. I will never go back to gas. EVER! There is confusion, dread not, he’s here.

BuyingBlack & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower With Rear BagEco-Friendly Lawn MowerOn May 3, 2010 I bought my electric Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog with rear bag directly from Amazon and I was using it within 3 days and I just like it. It is silent and it does not disturb my family nor my neighbors even if all the windows are open. I am a 56 yrs ancient female with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia and I cut my 1/2 acre with no problem. It is really what my Doctor ordered. I get to walk behind the lawnmower, a excellent exercise and get my grass cut at the same time without going deaf or inhaling fumes. My riding mower is going into retirement as far as I am concerned, maybe my husband will use it once in a while. I also bought the cover for it and it fits perfect. I like the fact that the cover has a small bag attached to it, I fold the cover and place it into the bag until I need to cover the mower again. The price I paid for both was much cheaper than I would have paid for just the Lawn-mower if I had bought them locally.

CheapestBlack & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower With Rear BagBetter than Gas mower for small yards.I have a fenced in 40′ X 20′ yard for my dog. Got tired of fighting to get the 5 year ancient 6.5 HP to start, even after replacing the wearable parts. This Black & Decker is simple to push. Slows down very small even in mulch mode. Couldn’t use the gas mower in mulch mode because it would bog down. Doesn’t collect grass underneath and bog down like the gas mower would in non-mulch mode. The gas mower was 21-Inch self-propelled, but it took a excellent 30% longer to cut the small yard. The gas mower heavier weight with many unpropelled turns against the fence in a small yard slows the job down.

Low PriceBlack & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower With Rear Bagdoes what i needI have used this mower on a patch of grass 10 x 15 ft in front of my HOA controlled house, works flawlessly. So it’s fantastic for yards not worth the hassle of a gas mower.

Lowest PriceBlack & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower With Rear BagLawn hog brilliant choiceI went into a mobile home community and I never had an electric lawn mower in my life. I went from a 2 acre plus lawn to about a 1/16 of an acre where I live now, I wanted a mower that would be simple to maintain and work well. I found that in the Lawn Hog I bought. I knew it would take getting used to using an extension cord, and I havent mastered that yet, but overall, I have found it to be the perfect choice for the size of my lawn. It cuts very well and is easily maintained. No gas or oil to worry about or tuneups either. I would recommend this product to anyone with a small, flat piece of land.

Where To BuyBlack & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower With Rear Bag

review of electric lawnmower–very satisfactoryThis lawnmower doesn’t make a lot of noise. Not very heavy. Simple to turn over and clean after use. Multiple settings for height of grass which are very simple to change. Folding handle for simple storage. Advances easily. No need to push hard. I am satisfied with this product.

Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower With Rear BagEasy height adjustment and no gasoline. My lawn is small, perhaps 300 square feet. This mower mows and mulches it well. My first one of these only lasted about 3 years before shorting out, I’ll try to repair it later. I liked it so much though that I bought the same thing again. No gas station trips, no oil changes or tuneups, and very simple one hand height adjustment. I did not want another battery either, and the cord does not bother me. Owner’s manual includes tips to not mow your extention cord (for those prone to such things).

CheapBlack & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 Amp Electric Mulching Mower With Rear BagDependable and Fantastic Value MowerI bought one of these at the tail end of last season, and have used it all season this year. Prior to buying this mower, I had a Neuton battery mower. It just didn’t have enough power, and the battery life was not acceptable. In addition, the mowing width was small. This mower resolved my problems. It has a lot of power, and you don’t have to worry about the battery going dead while mowing. It is wider, and is always reliable. Initially I wondered how it would be to maneuver with a cord, but it really turned out to be a non-issue. The only minor suggestion I would make to the manufacturer, is to design it just a small bit lighter (my lawn is on a slope). All you must do to start the mower is pull the lever, so there is no difficulty as with a gas mower. I recommend that you spray the bottom of the mower with a cooking spray before using, and after each cleaning underneath. That makes if very simple to clean the grass that tends to cake on the bottom of any mower when the grass is moist. When you buy an electric mower, you are also preventing quite a bit off pollution. The average gas mower makes as much pollution during one mowing as driving your car about 200 miles ! You may also want to compare the offerings on Amazon.com to Tylertools.com. They have some excellent deals and often provide free shipping. Overall, I am very pleased with this product and would buy it again.

John Deere is a name that is synonymous to making quality tractors for your lawn. But, their mowers are not particularly well known. But, that doesn’t mean that these are poor quality mowers or that they are mowers which are not fit for being used on the lawns. In fact, John Deere lawn mowers are still very excellent at their job and can in fact mow the lawn with relatively less effort. You just need to choose the right model to get the job done so that you won’t have anything to complain about later on.The mowers are pretty standard and come with all the necessary features that one would expect from these kinds of mowers. The one thing that you might want to watch out for is what kind of system the mower uses with the lawn. While some of them use a straightforward mulching system, others use a side disposable system and hence, you should choose as to which is the system that is more convenient to use on your lawn. John Deere lawn mowers come in a plethora of options and you shouldn’t have a particularly hard time choosing the right kind of option. As long as you are sure about your choice, there shouldn’t be any problem.Noise level is something that manufacturers have routinely overlooked till now. With stringent norms, it has become necessary to contain the noise levels as well to an approved limit so that there are no problems for the customers while using the mower. If you look at any reputed lawn mower ratings, they will usually specify that John Deere lawn mowers have a very low operating noise level. This is something to rejoice and probably excellent news to any individual who wants to invest in these mowers. As with all John Deere products, the mowers are no different and carry a reasonable warranty period. You can be assured of very excellent and competent customer service who can take care of all your needs and ensure that you have nothing much to complain about. These mowers are very excellent, in the sense that they are extremely simple to operate. But, novice users might find it tough and will need the support of the professionals in order to rectify any problems that they might encounter. If this is the case, you should certainly ensure that the mower you buy comes with decent customer service.  Later, when you are stuck with a problem, you can be at least sure of getting prompt customer service. While most dealers don’t stock John Deere lawn mowers and prefer to stock their tractors instead, you should be able to find a dealer who can sell one of these mowers to you online. As long as you are sure of the kind of model that you are interested, you shouldn’t find it very hard to find the one which will suit your needs. Try bargaining, as most people don’t go in for mowers made by this company. You should be able to get a excellent model at a very excellent price with a small haggling.

I replaced the Black & Decker electric lawn mower, which was more than 20 years. I knew this I would buy a excellent product. I was not disappointed. This is even better because it is so hard, and it’s nice to be able to “bag of weed.”

Black & Decker MM1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Corded Electric Lawn Mowerwell performing machineI had the previous B&D model for over 12 years. I still have it for parts. This machine is designed a tad bit differently but it performs well. It now has a padded handle and the top deck is a bit higher. I don’t like the larger deck but now grass won’t get under the ‘hood’ that used to be there which made cleanup a bit more on the older model. The height adjuster is better too, with just a squeeze you can go up or down very quick. So far this machine has met all my expectations. I let someone else use a gas mower on my lawn since I’m having back distress and my hill in the back yard makes walking hard for me. Well, that said, I went right back to my mowing the next time. The gas mower did a horrible job on my lawn and this man had a new mower too. He could run quicker than I do but it was a very terrible job. He didn’t mean to do this, he had a excellent machine and does make it look nice for a day or two. After I mowed it the next time, people even stopped and told me how gorgeous my yard was. I do like the manicured look. I had to cut off more grass this time due to the setting on the gas mower set higher. This machine withstood it all. We bagged it which I despised and is the reason I will go back to mowing myself. We took off 13 large bags of clippings with the rear bag and it handled it very well (this was the grass left behind from the gas mower). I like the mulch feature much more myself and that is why I will use this machine exclusively from now on. I have not had to bag in over 13 years so this was a huge disappointment on having to pay someone to do a worse job. My ancient model worked so well that in the fall season I only ever raked leaves once. These machines will mulch up leaves, small sticks and anything I give it. I have loved that since like I previously said, I like a manicured yard. The mulching is so fine it re-fertilizes the yard. I fertilize once, maybe twice a year and have the greenest yard around. Yes, I am a woman and walk slower than the running this service did to see how quick they could get done. Also, with my back I do the front one day and the back yard the next due to my health. I also live in Texas and in 100 degree heat I wait and only mow in the early morning or very late in the day. I like how I can store this mower standing on its nose. It takes up such small space in the shed. I never leave it out. You also should not use this mower if it is starting to rain which I did sometimes with a gas mower. Being electric I would never try that. Mowing shouldn’t be done in the rain anyway. I never have to rake up clippings either. My neighbor lets others mow her grass all the time and this last time they left two inches of clippings in her yard. She had to have someone else rake and mow two days later just to get up the mess before it killed her whole yard. Those expenses make me glad to have gotten this mower for the price that Amazon or home improvement stores charge. I was going to get the Sears brand but it cost more and had a metal deck. I like the plastic, it is simple to clean and won’t rust. My last one is still in one piece after a long work history and much abuse. Another thing no one has mentioned is that this mower can go forward and backward. You can mow up the hill and go over and mow down the hill backwards, no turning around. My husband used to yell at me all the time with the gas mower since it cannot go backwards. I have obstacles in my yard like wires to a ham tower, clothes line polls, trees and other items. I can go around them all with a bit of plotting with the cord and have no distress. A friend came first of the year to do the back yard with the cord and he even said he liked this mower. He showed me to store the cord like crocheting it and it pulls back out without kinks in it. This makes the beginning mowing better now since I have less cord until I pull it out for the further away parts. Yes, you do have to start nearest the plug and work outward but once you get used to the machine, you forget all about that. Just always hold the cord in your left hand and walk on. I mow with one hand this mower is so light. My right hand can hold the safety clip and push and I just had hand surgery too. Now I hope this machine works as long as the other did and it is well worth the price I paid. My ancient one came to $17 per year of use. That was with a new blade and a new switch the last year before I killed it. My husband still wants to tinker with it so it may be resurrected yet. I mowed three yards back then, now I can only do my own due to health. Oh, and I use a 100 foot cord that costs about $16 to buy and I can use it for everything else in between. Like the electric weed eater, the Christmas lights etc so that buy negates itself. I only cut my cord in half once in 12 years. I was the fault not the corded mowing. I got very hot in 110 heat and nearly passed out, I turned around and cut the cord. I unplugged it and that was that. With the rubber grip handles there is no danger except your human self. Always be safe, plug into ground fault plugs which should be on an outside outlet anyway.

BuyingBlack & Decker MM1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Corded Electric Lawn MowerWONDERFUL !I replaced an electric Black&Decker lawnmower that was over 20 years ancient. I knew going into it that I would be buying a excellent product. I wasn’t disappointed. This one is even better because it isn’t as heavy and it’s nice to be able to “bag” the grass.

CheapestBlack & Decker MM1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Corded Electric Lawn MowerNo Gas. No Fumes. No Complaints Whatsoever.I was getting tired of 1) my gas-powered mower giving me issues and 2) having to determine what the problem was (spark plug? clogged filter? terrible gas?). So I chose to buy an electric mower. After reading dozens of reviews, and not wanting to have to replace a battery every two years with a cordless mower, I picked up the MM1800 at a local brick-and-mortar store. I’ve had this mower for 3 weeks now. Plain and simple, I like it. Assembly was very simple; it took about 10 minutes to attach the handle. It comes with padded handle grips already attached (but not pictured), so your hands aren’t rubbing against bare metal. It has a lever for the simultaneous height adjustment of all four wheels. I like to mulch when I mow, so I don’t use the bag to catch the grass clippings. You will need a 100′ cord to mow comfortably; I’m fortunate enough to have outlets on 3 sides of my house, so it reaches the outer edges of my 1/4-acre lot with plenty of cord to spare. Mowing with a cord will take a small practice at first. I now have a pattern where I mow closest to the house first and then mow away from it, keeping the cord between the house and the mower. I don’t have any serious issues with power; the mower gets a small slower in thicker, taller grass, but so did my gas mower. The noise level is not as silent as I thought it would be, but it’s not as loud as the gas mower (to me, it sounds like my leaf blower, but muffled quite a bit). I used one reviewer’s tip and sprayed Pam underneath the mower. It really works…cleanup is a breeze. Considering that I don’t have to worry about spark plugs, oil, gas, filters and tune-ups, along with the added benefit of not having to breathe noxious fumes, I’m very pleased with my buy.

Lowest PriceBlack & Decker MM1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Corded Electric Lawn MowerFirst electric mower…fantastic first impressionsI’ve just bought my first house and the yard was finally long enough to need a cut this weekend. We have a pretty small lot, maybe 1/4 acre, and the backyard had nearly no grass because of the way it was landscaped. I chose that I didn’t need a huge self-propelled mower, and originally through maybe I’d get a reel mower before I chose that keeping the blades in shape would be too much of a bother. I did a small research and found that the MM875 had brilliant reviews here on Amazon. This one, the MM1800, had no reviews, but from everything I see it’s exactly the same but with a slightly narrower cutting diameter. I finished up picking it up from Lowes, and then made another trip back after realizing that my extension cord was only 25′ and not quite enough for my hard. The mower is really very light and simple to set up in about 5 minutes. Starting it up is as simple as pulling the lever up against the handle, which I like because growing up, my dad’s mower took 50 pulls to get it going. The mower is very simple to push, and has an adjustable handle for different height preferences. The adjustment for the cutting height is also very well done, where you just have to go a single lever on one of the back wheels and it takes care of the whole mower. I used the mower on mulching mode and didn’t notice any piles of clippings anywhere; they were very very fine and evenly distributed. I have not tried the bag yet. The only possible negative that I can bring up after this first mow is the cord, which is something that you should have gone into purchasing this mower knowing. I always used to mow the lawn twice around in a circle, then cut a diagonal down the center, and then follow that diagonal back and forth each direction. With the cord, this technique left me having to stop and adjust the cord a lot near the end of my mowing. In the future, I will do the two laps and then simply start at one end (either diagonally or horizontally) and mow progressively away from the outlet. Pros: No need for gas, and no battery to wear out Silent, compared to most gas mowers Simple to push, comfortable to hold, very small vibrations in the handle Simple to adjust the cutting height Simple to turn on/start Cons: Cord can get in the way if you don’t plot your cutting pattern EDIT: I’ve now had the mower for a few months and used it 10 or more times, and I really have no complaints still. The only possible thing I can add is that I have found that the “plug” for when you’re using mulching rather than bagging can get a significant amount of grass build-up on it as compared to some other mowers I’ve used, but I don’t see that as an issue whatsoever.

There are a number of excellent lawn mowers out there which are very underrated. Yardman happens to be one such company which makes brilliant lawn mowers but are not extremely well-known or chosen as the first preference by people who eventually buy them. But, one thing that is common with the people who do buy them is that they are very pleased with the overall performance of the device. This is what goes into making a so called best lawn mower – customer satisfaction. Yardman mowers happen to score high on these parameters and will ensure that you will not regret having bought the mower at all.The simple reason for the high customer satisfaction lies in the fact that yard man lawn mowers stick to the basics and don’t have anything fancy or complicated added to them. This can be verified by the fact that none of their mowers have any fancy features that you might find in some of the other high end mower. Yet, go ahead and use the mower and you will be extremely pleased with its performance. It does its basic function exceedingly well and you might not have much to complain about. As long as these factors are excellent, the mower that you buy will be the best lawn mower for you.Unlike some of the other high end lawn mowers, most of the yard man lawn mowers models allow the cutting height to be changed on the glide. You don’t have to go through some complicated setting in order to change the height and this can be something that the users of the device will appreciate a lot. This option is usually not present in some other models, for which you might have paid a significant amount of money. It reduces the effort required to use the mower and you can get it up and running in no time.On the same lines, you might also notice that yard man lawn mowers start up in a small period of time, and usually are running with the first crank alone. Hence, there is no complicated process involved in order to get it running without any complex issues. You don’t have to place in too much effort and it is possible to get it running without breaking your back. Other strong aspects which help it become the best lawn mower include the engine, which is quite a powerhouse for its size. Most of the owners who bought this mower are extremely pleased with the performance. They bought it with the hopes of getting a excellent all around mower that won’t burn a hole in their pocket. Fortunately, this mower satisfies on that front and delivers on its promises. You will get top notch quality without any of the problems that are associated with the mower. In fact, the customer service is not too shabby either and if you are stuck with some problem, you can always post it online where other yardman owners are more than willing to help you out.

A perfectly mowed lawn is the cornerstone of a gorgeous property. During the growing season, if you look around at the yards in your neighborhood, it is usually pretty simple to tell the lawns that look as though they were mowed by a professional landscape maintenance service from the ones that look as though they were hacked down by the kid who lives up the street. Whether you use a walk behind mower, or a ride on machine, this technique will work for you.

Here are 8 steps that, with a small practice and patience, are sure to give your lawn a professionally mowed appearance.

Before you start, though, make sure that your lawn mower has been properly maintained, in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. Make sure the mower blade is sharpened and balanced – replace if necessary, taking care to disconnect the sparkplug before reaching under the mower. Also, be sure to wear appropriate safety equipment like noise reducing ear-muffs, or earplugs, vibration absorbing gloves, and protective eyewear.

Set your mower to an appropriate mowing height of 2 ½” to 3 ½”, for most cool season grasses. To avoid damaging your lawn, do not cut more than one inch, or one-third of the total current length of the lawn, at any one mowing. Mowing your lawn every 5 – 7 days, with no bag, ensures relatively small grass clippings that will quickly dry up becoming unnoticeable, and eventually compost, nourishing the lawn.

Now you’re ready to mow the lawn, well, nearly;

1. Using either a manual or power trimmer, proceed around the perimeter of the area to be mowed, trimming grass that would be hard to reach with the mower. Trim the grass to the height you plot to mow the lawn – from the property line in about 4” to 6” should suffice. When the perimeter is done, continue trimming around trees, fence and lamp posts, islands and flower beds, drives and walks, and also around things like sprinkler heads and decorative rocks, making mental note to watch out for these obstacles when mowing.

2. Now, grab a trash bag and do a quick walk-about, picking up any debris and sticks, so they don’t get run over by the lawn mower. In your mind, divide the lawn into major sections for mowing.

3. Start your mower and make 3 complete passes around the perimeter of one of the major sections of lawn, allowing the grass clippings to discharge toward the center of the lawn. This gives you plenty of room to turn the lawn mower around without leaving patches of un-cut grass.

4. About half-way down one side of the section, turn so that you are facing the opposite side; with approximately equal amounts of lawn on your right and left.

5. Look across the section and pick a spot on the opposite side, directly across the lawn. Walk directly toward the spot you picked on the opposite side. Focusing on the spot, rather than the area directly in front of the mower, will help you make a straight line. Mowing in straight lines and proper trimming are the keys to a professional looking job. It is impossible to emphasize enough, though, the importance of bearing in mind the obstacles mentioned above. Pay attention and don’t run something over just for the sake of keeping a straight line.

6. Once you get across the lawn, carefully turn your mower around and look back at the line you just made. You can now see any places where the line varies from straight and, usually within the next pass or two, right it right up. End one side of the section, then the next, and then proceed to each section and repeat the process until the whole lawn is mowed.

7. When you are done mowing, take one more look at the vital spots like entrance ways, walks and drives, and other places that draw your attention. If you missed any patches with the trimmer, or on lawn mower turn-around spots, now is the time to go back and get them. Paying close attention to the details is what sets the professional lawn care company apart from the kid who lives up the street.

8. Finally, use a broom or leaf blower to push stray grass clippings back on to the lawn. Beginning with the area around the primary entrance to your home, clean off the landing and steps, continue along the walkway and out the driveway to the road. Clean off any decks or patios you may have, or anywhere else that has collected unsightly grass clippings.

Here are three more things to keep in mind while mowing.

First, when using a power trimmer, like a line feed trimmer, the grass is ripped, not cleanly-cut, where it makes contact with the string. It is really simple to hurt the grass, so be careful not to over-do – better it look a small less than perfect than you wind up whacking a hole in the lawn.

The next one applies when using a self-propelled mower, on turn-a-rounds. If the pivot wheel stops turning completely (or the power wheel loses traction), it will nearly certainly tear up the grass, below. Always turn around slowly, but make sure that all the wheels of the mower keep turning, at least a small bit. This way you will minimize the hurt done by the mower, on turn-a-rounds.

Finally, while you may have a favorite direction in which to mow your lawn, front-back, side-side, diagonal, or even something more unique, it is probably best to mow it a different direction, at least every other time. This, too, will help minimize hurt to your lawn by reducing the frequency with which you turn around on the same spots.

As you can see, mowing to achieve that ‘professional look’ takes a bit more attention to detail, strategic plotting and time than you may be used to spending on your lawn. With some patience and practice, though, your efforts will pay off, and your lawn will look as though it has been mowed by a professional landscaper.

Let me start off by saying I have been using this mower now for two seasons. I am really passionate about robotic lawnmowers.  I have the Lawnbott Evolution. I still find myself stopping and looking out the window of the house in disbelief that a robot is mowing my lawn.  At least once, if not more times, per day people stop in the street and stare at the mower wondering what it is.  I have gotten to the point that I have place a sign on top of the mower telling what it is, where you can buy one and how much it costs.  Unless you have a lawn service already doing the mowing, you can’t believe how much time mowing your lawn really takes.  This mower will free you from that duty and give you more free time to do things you like. Here is the basic operation of the mower: If you live in the Midwest like me, you start this mower some time in the spring, March or April, when the snow is out of the yard. Generally I don’t touch it until the late fall when the grass stops growing, November or so.  The mower decides what days and how often per day to mow.  Yes it can mow more than one time per day.  That is pretty much it.  Trim the yard around the bushes and the tiny areas it doesn’t get. Really! How does it know when to mow?   That is a really excellent question.  I can’t tell you any more than it just does. It will adjust the amount of mowing it does depending on how quick the grass is growing and how large your lawn is.  My guess would be that it detects the load on the cutting motor and determines that the grass is deep or not deep.  I gather this because when the mower finds a deep patch of grass it will ramp up the blade speed and cut it in an expanding spiral until the deep grass is cut.  The mower will then continue on its normal cutting routine.   How long does it take to mow the lawn?  This really is a moot point.  You have to change the way you reckon about mowing the lawn.  This mower will just go and go and go and eventually it is done.  Your grass will stay the same height all year long.  No more tall grass, small grass, tall grass, small grass.  No more giant clumps of grass turning brown after you mow. What does it run on? The mower has one or two 24 volt batteries. How do you charge it? You don’t, it does.  When the battery gets to a set point, the mower will make a return trip around the perimeter wire, trimming as it goes, to the charging house and park itself.   What if it rains? That is a pretty excellent question.  If it rains the mower can do two things.  It will go back to the charging house and wait until you come out and push the start button or it can wait for 24 hours and try to come out again.  If the rain sensor detects rain, it will then go back to the house and wait more, repeat, repeat, etc. But I have hills, it can’t do them can it? Yes, it can do pretty darn steep hills.  27 degrees is the limit of hills the mower can handle.  It might not sound steep but a 27 degree hill is steeper than any hill you can drive a car on. It is steeper than any riding mower will handle.  Granted, to do this grade, you will need the optional spiked wheels and wheelie bars. How do I know?  I have them for my mower. How loud is this thing? Place it this way, you can’t hear it when you are in the house.  In fact, you really can’t hear it if you are 50 feet away.  It is quieter than your dishwasher (unless you have a Bosch like I do).  You will start to get annoyed at gas mowers in the neighborhood because they are so loud.  This thing can sneak up on you at night.  It has a blinking light in the front so you can see it at night. What if it leaves the yard? You don’t have to worry about this.  If the mower leaves your perimeter wire area it will hunt for the wire by turning in a circle. If after a few seconds it doesn’t see the wire it will shut down and beep.  The LCD will show a message, “Out of bounds”.  You just pick it up and restart it in your yard.  This can happen when you have a 90 degree corner in the wire (a no, no in the setup) or it slides on a steep, wet slope and you don’t have the spiked wheels.  I experienced both of these and learned from them.    Won’t it hurt my dogs or kids?  If the mower is picked up, the blade immediately stops. You have the option of putting a startup password in so if you want the mower won’t be able to start again unless you key in the password.  The blade has a guard around it so wayward fingers are protected quite a bit from accidental injury.  Now know this, it is a lawn mower.  If someone intentionally finds a way to get the wheels off the ground, tilt the mower and reach around the guard, they are going to get hurt.  But then again, no amount of protection can prevent a truly stupid person from doing a truly stupid thing, you can’t fix stupid.   The huge brother of this mower has a feature that stops the blade as soon as someone touches the rear handle, this model does not do that.  Honestly, it has never been an issue for me.  I have a 3 year ancient and 5 year ancient and neither goes near the mower.  They call it Moe. The neighbors have a dog, one of those small barky things that bark at a leaf.  It ignores this mower. Someone will steal it won’t they? The mower will not work outside your yard.  The perimeter wire sends a coded signal that tells the mower it is in an approved yard.  Without this signal, the mower will not start. (there is a dealer diagnostic mode that bypasses this but how many thieves are dealers or even know how to enter this diagnostic mode)The mower also has a built in alarm that will sound if someone picks up the mower and tries to carry it away from your yard.  That should be enough to deter nearly everyone.According to the manufacturer, no one has ever reported one of their mowers stolen. My house insurance will go up won’t it? My insurance has not changed and my agent knows I have this mower because I listed it specifically on my policy. Setup: The initial setup of the mower might seem a small daunting at first.  You have to place a perimeter wire around your yard, like an Invisible Fence dog fence.  The huge difference between the mower’s wire and the dog fence is you don’t have to bury the mower’s wire.  It just sits on top of the grass held in place with pegs.   After about 6 weeks of grass growth, it is integrated into the lawn and you can’t see it.   After a full season, the wire is really under the lawn and you will have distress finding it.  I have around 1/2 acre that is mowed by this mower and setting up the wire took me about 2.5 hours. If you have bushes or trees you don’t want the mower to hit, just place a loop of wire off the main line around this bush and it gets included in the perimeter and is protected from getting bumped into by the mower. The perimeter wire acts not only as a fence to keep the mower in but also as a follow line for edging the yard when it is done with the cutting cycle for the given period. Throughout the year: The first day you have the mower and it goes out you will stand there and stare at it.  No doubt in my mind.  Then it will go back to its house at the end of the cycle and your lawn will not be completely mowed.  You will reckon, “I just spent how much?!!!”  The same thing the second day, but by the third day your lawn will be nearly entirely done. Remember, you aren’t mowing so give it time to learn your lawn.  It appears to drive around randomly and couldn’t possibly get everything.  It will.  You will find in the beginning that your mower will be getting stuck here and there in places of your lawn that there is a hole, rock or something else you didn’t see or consider.  After some initial futzing around, the mower needs very small attention.  Your border needs to be set up in such a way that the mower won’t slide into a pond, off a ledge or something else like that.   There are various suggested distances in the setup guide to tell you how far to place the perimeter wire from these obstacles.  Follow them and you’ll keep the mower for a long time.  As the manufacturer told me, the mower is waterproof but it only works as a submarine one time before you have to buy a new one. Maintenance: You really only have to flip the blade over in the middle of the season.  It has 8 sharp edges, 4 on each side.  The blade is about 12″ in diameter and about as thick as the cardboard on a cereal box.  How long will it last? The mower come with a 12 month warranty on all parts.  Well, I have had mine for two years now.  The outer shell is showing scratches and one crack in the lower edge.  All of this was caused by me not completely following the perimeter setup and the mower impacting something it wasn’t designed to impact, retaining walls in the front and sides and dropping off a retaining wall edge cracking the cover.I had a couple wheel motor issues that were covered under warranty very quickly.   A nice side note is that when a part goes terrible, the warranty on that part starts again. The manufacturer of this mower is Italian.  You have to keep in mind the Italian mindset is not the same as American.  They are more laid back and what is a problem to us is a minor thing they will fix when they get to it.  I can attest to this having spent a bit of time in Italy. The batteries are rated to last 5 seasons.  At $300 each they aren’t cheap but they are cheaper than 5 seasons of gas and going to get the gas.  Your time isn’t free remember. Winter Storage: Bring it inside and place it on the winter charger to maintain the battery.  While in storage it is the perfect time to sharpen the blade which you can do with a kitchen knife sharpener.  That is the extent of winter storage.Cost of Operation: It costs about $30 a year (if you leave it turned on in the winter too mind you) in electricity to charge and run the perimeter wire to run the mower. No gas, no oil changes. Feel free to contact me if you have questions on this mower that aren’t clarified here. jspahn@mac.com

Using New Lawnmower Blades

August 26th, 2010

Cutting the lawn is essential to keep it looking excellent and to ensure that the grass is in excellent condition too. But, to be able to do this a lawnmower needs to be up to the job in order to keep it in a excellent condition and to cut all of the grass properly.
The problem some people face is that their lawnmowers are not up to scratch or something is restricting it from cutting the grass properly. The main cause of this could be down to the state of the lawnmower blades, as these are obviously really vital in order to cut the grass.
Looking After the Lawnmower Blades Is Vital
The lawnmower blades will become blunt over time especially if you use the lawnmower a lot. Because they are blunt, it will not cut the grass as well as you would like it to.
There are things that you can do but to help with this problem. One of them is to sharpen the blades on a regular basis. By doing this, it will ensure that the blades are sharp enough to cut through the grass with minimum fuss and it will also mean less work. It can be extremely hard work pushing the lawnmower around with blunt blades as it will require more effort and it will take a lot longer. As well as sharpening them, you may have to replace them if the blades snap or break.
How Should You Sharpen a Lawnmower Blade?
This needs to be done carefully because if the lawnmower started up with you touching the blade and it will cause serious hurt. So, the first thing that you should do is turn the power supply to the lawnmower completely off. If it is a battery powered lawnmower you should just take the batteries out of it.
Now you need to take the blades out, but be careful not to let your hand slip if you are using a spanner to get them out. Then it is time to sharpen them so it is suggested to place them in a vice or somewhere stable so they do not go. Sharpen it with either a grinder or a file and after this it is now time to place them back in to the lawnmower securely. Once it is back in place it is now time to test it and you should notice the difference instantly.
How to Choose the Right Blade for Your Lawnmower
Sometimes the current blades in a lawnmower may snap or break and therefore they will need to be replaced. When it comes to getting a lawnmower blade it will really depend upon what type of lawnmower you have. If the lawnmower you have uses special blades you have to know the brand name and product id number in order to find the right ones. So, it may take some thought about getting the blades rather than just picking up any and expecting them to work properly. Overall as long as you know which blades you do have it should be honestly simple to find some which you need.
